A New Me With #DefinitelyPTE...

When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.

Clifton Fadiman hit the nail on the head with this quote of his, and I am not sure whether he the same perspective in mind that I do but this statement fits like a puzzle piece in the jigsaw of the higher education or professional pursuance scenario.

Come to think of it, settlement in foreign lands is certainly not a piece of cake, more so in the nascent stage, even if one sets foot on non-native land by virtue of learning or career.

Migration is not an alien concept to mankind, given the fact that our lifestyle today stems from a nomadic beginning that delved gradually into long-term settlement ever since the stone age.

The scenario hasn't changed much, even today, since the reasons for such an exodus are largely attributed to individual want for an enhanced standard of living coupled with the unsaid yet prominent manifestation of an enriched culture.

 ~~~
While overseas education is very much the 'in-thing', it is the 'behind-the-scenes' action that an individual's peers often overlook as spectators. The move is often viewed as an element of pride to be boasted about in circles more often than not, by one's immediate relatives. However, it is the preparation for the switch that is sapping on more fronts than one for a person who firmly decides to 'just do it'.
A similar fate unfolds for an individual who attempts to sap foreign lands for liquid gains on the professional front, be it a short-term or long-term avenue.
It is a commendable decision nonetheless, to let go of the homeland, even if for a few years at a stretch for the aforesaid forks in the road.
 ~~~

More often than not, it is a steadfast positive attitude that makes the journey smooth-sailing. Being capable of adjusting to peculiar situations not only provides strength to the character but also enhances the world-view perspective.

After all, life begins where the comfort zone ends and exploration of the self begins when one is subjected to unfamiliar terrains, is it not?

Given the fact that self-reliance leads to self-realization in such a scenario, it comes as no surprise that distance makes the heart grow fonder.

 ~~~
While zeroing in on the subject of specialization and the institute of interest is itself an insurmountable task, accustoming oneself to the variation in student culture (and otherwise also)
is also no child's play.
On the other hand, most of the application processes are also intellectually taxing in terms of drafting a Statement of Purpose and ensuring that all relevant documents are in place for the most part.
To add to these is the woe of ascertaining a dependable source to finance one's scholarly sojourn.
As if these weren't hurdles aplenty, the elephant in the room - passport validities and associated visa applications - are yet to arrive.
To top it all, deducing the nitty-gritty of student accommodation in a foreign land is no mean feat if that were to be a consolation at all! After all, you can't call it a day within the four walls of a classroom, can you?
 ~~~

Unless you've devised your way of coping with the absence of home-field advantage (read homesickness), keeping a diary entry provides a seasoned way to preserve memoirs of that half-a-decade adventure, as well as facilitating a means to cope with sudden emotional outbursts.

On the other hand, the culture shock can be coped with to a certain extent, thanks to the thriving presence of social media, is it not? After all, being prepared is key.

While we feel that we are going to find a pot of gold at the end of each rainbow, the reality presents a stark contrast as patience would be of utmost importance to balance most, if not all aspects.

After all, devising a fresh routine in accordance with a brand new time zone can take a few practice sessions. :)

 ~~~
However, the most effective means to bridge the gap on all fronts in life is, you guessed it, communication. As much as we may resent it, English is a foreign language for us, Indians. As a result, it is the most critical avenue to master before stepping out in the sun. For, if you're not careful enough, you'll be burnt to a crisp for sure.
While TOEFL and IELTS take precedence as the most prevalent and popular English Language Tests across the globe, the folks at Pearson India have attempted to ease the hassle to a certain extent by professing #DefinitelyPTE - a smart alternative for students and professionals alike - to manifest their proficiency in the English language on a global platform.
In accordance with the norm for competitive exams in the nation, PTE Academic (short for Pearson Test of English Academic) is a single, three-hour, computer-based test that assesses candidates on the four pillars of the language - namely -  Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening - in three parts with twenty question types, coupled with an optional scheduled break of ten minutes.
Backed by data forensics of the likes of palm vein scanning, coupled zero bias towards the background of test takers, and an accurate and consistent test score curve, it is #DefinitelyPTE all the way as PTE Academic emerges as an English Language Test of choice for aspirants.
With a wide recognition sphere across the globe as far acceptance for study applications by institutions worldwide is concerned, Pearson India scores on this front as an increasingly viable option. Be it Asia, Europe, America, or Australia, #DefinitelyPTE is gaining greater acceptance by the minute.
In order to aid familiarization towards the test pattern, Pearson India has also made available a means for the best immediate study material for the same. With a variety of preparation packages at their disposal, students have one less reason to fret over. :)
While the scored practice tests are a direct indication of an aspirant's readiness for the test, thus enabling them to decide when to take the giant leap towards their dream course or job, the means to registering for the test is also as seamless as the experience of the test itself, with registration rendered open for up to 24 hours in advance either over phone or the world wide web. Moreover, tests are held for over 360 days a year, up to five days a week, with multiple time slots daily.
Assessed on a granular scale of 10-90, providing a detailed breakdown of performance based on skills, the scorecard presents an accurate assessment of a test taker’s proficiency. What's more, results would be made available typically within five business days via the score report module. Students can further submit their scores (valid for a period of two years) to an unlimited number of varsities.
While there is no dearth whatsoever of test centers over the globe with over fifty countries in the offing, a few prominent and prestigious institutes that accept scores awarded by PTE Academic are Stanford University, Imperial College London, University of Canberra Australia, University of Illinois Chicago, Tokyo International University Japan, and Harvard University.
 ~~~

On the whole, it is of the essence to remember and constantly remind oneself that the power of the purpose must be greater than the pain we experience along the journey. For it is a mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions. :)

The Story Of Life...

This post has been declared as one of the Winners, albeit Early Bird, in the IndiChange Contest hosted by The Story Of A Suicide and IndiBlogger.

 ~~~
What is Life?
It is contained between B and D.
Between Birth and Death
But between B and D is a C.
What is a C?
It's a Choice
Our Life is a matter of Choices.
 ~~~

Each of our lives is a reality to be experienced. It is also true that one's life is not a black box in its entirety. Fortunately or not, we inhabit a society are expected to abide by societal norms and take into consideration, that are deep seated into our mindsets, from the moment we acquire the capability to comprehend them.

Also, we are one of the two sides of a scale, that is a relationship. We are not solitary beings, but have a multitude of inter-personal relationships to cater to, while subconsciously agreeing to embark on a roller-coaster ride of emotions. Each one of us has a role to play in every other person's life, whomever we come across.

However, the most important fact of our lives remains that each stage of life has a lesson for us to imbibe into ourselves and learn from as we herald one of them and bid farewell to another, throughout our lifetime.

Charles Swindoll had said that life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it. I could not have agreed more, as each incident acts as a stimuli for us to react, guided by our heart and mind. More often than not, we are caught at a fork in the road. We are perplexed, confused by the plethora of reactions, sometimes an emotional outburst resulting as a consequence of a stressful situation.

Often, we are able to navigate our way through the maze. Often, we are not. We end up losing track of how we wanted to tackle a particular situation versus what was meant to be done. The way out is introspection and advice. Advice from our parents, friends, our confidante, someone who is able to comprehend our dilemma and guide us out of it. Introspection towards the pros and cons of the way in way in which we react can often chalk out a way toward the workaround.

Nothing happens until we are able to decide as to which way our life moves forward, though. It is also true, that bad decisions make for good stories. Stories that make way for good decisions, as good decisions come from experience, which in turn comes from bad decisions. :)

Ups and downs, highs and lows are all part and parcel of life, as a consequence of the decisions we make and abide by. However, no circumstance is worse enough for one to decide to commit suicide. However evident it may seem that suicide is the way out, it is not. For it is the one bad decision that would not make for a good story and certainly not pave any way for any decisions thereafter!

Suicidal tendencies are silent killers, finally culminating into the terrifying act, that has repercussions towards one's family, friends, near and dear ones. It leaves them dumbfounded to discover such a harsh truth. After all, suicide appears to be the ultimate escape. However, escapism is easy, no doubt. But, it takes courage to beat adversity in the face! :)

 ~~~
The other day, I had come across The Story Of A Suicide, a novel penned by Sriram Ayer and illustrated by Ghana. The moment I sat down to give it a read, I was impressed by the fact that it brought to the fore, an unexplored dimension of what goes on inside the mind of a person who is led to believe that suicide is the ultimate answer to all questions.
 ~~~

How does the mindset work and why does it work in the manner it does? I was intrigued by such queries and I decided to go ahead. The name itself, was interesting enough to prompt me to take the plunge.

Turns out, it is a narrative encompassing the lives of four individuals, youngsters, whose lives cross each other's path on the premise of love, passion, revenge and deceit. Focusing on the lives of Hari, Sam, Charu, and Mani (in that order). It is a depiction that mirrors real-life. The mannerisms of the youth of today's times have been depicted prolifically, with the extensive reference to gadgets, blogs, social media interactions, Twitter Mentions (using @)  and Twitter hashtags (using #). Quite commonplace, and relate-able in today's social media-savvy era.

Social media is already touted as the harbinger of change, acting as a bearer of public opinion, and the novel depicts just that. Also, being adolescents, The Story Of A Suicide relates the changeover from school to college life to the dynamism and excitement of a teenager. From the hostel culture prevalent in premier institutes in the country to the typical aggregation of peer pressure to the involvement of youth in new relationships to the affinity towards newer (and often misguiding) passions and desires, the portrayal of these real-life scenarios provide a reminisce of college life for most of us.

The novel also explores various personalities, mindsets, feelings, emotions, reactions, and incidents in the backdrop of realism across a span of thirty-one chapters. The fact that it begins with a Diary Entry addressing the World, and with the proclamation of the fact that the individual is going to die is itself gripping and leads the reader to explore Who it is and Why is he/she proclaiming so.

Quoting Kirthi Jayakumar, who is the Campaign Manager for The Story Of A Suicide:

"A young person decides to commit suicide. Who is this person? Why does he/she want to die? Where do they come from? Why are they upset, depressed and torn apart? And what drives them to it? Does he/she really die?"

 ~~~
"I am sad. I am tired. Helpless. Disillusioned. Paranoid. Unhappy.
Sorry, it would not do justice if I just gave only one adjective to describe my hurt."
The multitude of emotions in the above line depicts the demotivated, helpless and pained state of mind and heart. The narrative reached its superlative twice, for me.
First, with the letter that Hari writes to Sam, establishing the first connection between two individual characters. 'Our Secret' shows signs of seeing light.
Second, when the drama scales the height and 'Caesar Meets Draupadi'.
 ~~~

The fact that The Story Of A Suicide is "the first ever book presented online, the first ever book that you get to read for free, without even having to pirate a copy, the first ever book that you’ll leave bookmarks all over without do-gearing or marking blue flags on" is welcoming.

The 'How Do I?' pointers that accompany each chapter are reflective, introspective, and serve as a counsel. The questions highlighted would make some of the disillusioned youth, reading the novel, that they too, were seeking answers to some such troubling queries.

The Story Of A Suicide highlights the fact that today's generation is expressive, independent, fearless, dynamic, but at the same time, spirited. Bound by a world that presents them with unexpected challenges, and pressing expectations, today's youngsters form for a disillusioned lot. Figuring out their purpose in life, today's youth is constantly faced by a predicament. The difference of opinion with their elders also conflicts their personal opinions, at times.

Clouded by concerns the multiple facets that make them the individuals they are, be it about their education, relationships, jobs, sexuality, bullying, or abuse, they are audacious enough to say it in the face of adversity - Try Me! - instead of - Why Me? - thus coming to terms with the vulnerability that deters them from achieving their dreams, and keeping it at bay. They are thus, at a constant war, with their own selves!

The novel would aid such youth to come to terms with themselves and resolve to carve an identity for themselves with positivism that makes an effort to oppose the negativity that the world around us is brimming with.

Also, the Audio Book hosted on SoundCloud that is poignantly conveyed across, with the right tone and expressions (narrative alongside each chapter by Uday Danda) is what makes one feel that the screenplay comes alive from across the room! :)

I had listened to the novel rather than reading it, and believe me, it was not your computerized text-to-speech but it was as if the novelist was speaking out the contents of his literary marvel that touches upon a critical subject.

With a team of twelve individuals who have given shape to the novel and brought it out for the world, The Story Of A Suicide makes for a promising read, complemented by fitting visuals, metaphors, tone, and imagery, along with a diction that establishes a firm connect with the dialect of today's youth

On the other hand, realization of the importance of 'I' in one's life is essential. As it is 'I' who assumes responsibility for my actions, decisions, emotional outbursts, and it is 'I' who has to bear the consequences of the same.

It is 'I' who has to care for myself, none else is going to come and do that for me. After all, 'I' live in a big, bad, selfish world. To each one their own, because this is a society that 'I' aspire to survive in, not a factory churning out robots as per a predefined mold!

'I' must however, also keep in mind, that as rosy as the picture may seem after one takes a spur-of-moment decision, it doesn't take long enough for it to take the shape of regret in the long term.

Your skin is not a paper, don't cut it,
Your face isn't a mask, don't hide it,
Your size isn't a book, don't judge it,
Your life is not a film, don't END it.

Life Is Similar To A Semicolon

This post has been declared as one of the Winners in the IndiChange Contest hosted by The Story Of A Suicide and IndiBlogger.

 ~~~
L;fe ;s s;m;lar to a sem;colon.
It could have been ended, but it wasn't. :)
 ~~~

The Story of a Suicide is written by Sriram Ayer and illustrated by Ghana. Illustrations are as fabulous as the story. The story is more than what that title says. It is about hope and a stimulus to the youth to bring them to a level where they are empowered to stay alive, motivated, and strong.

Nobody should think about committing suicide as this is not an act of courage. First of all a person should avoid such situations where one's self-confidence borders the extent of void, and the person is forced to believe that it is best not to stay hand in hand with life. There are many ways of doing it. There are many ways of staying alive in this real world without losing a bit of courage and hope. The only thing required is a sound mind - positive thoughts and will-power to stay strong under all circumstances.

The Story of a Suicide by Sriram Ayer is a story of four main characters – Sam, Charu, Hari, and Mani. All four have lead their own life, have their own routine. And none of them on this Earth is devoid of any stresses or issues in life. Each of them has to face a number of problems from time to time. And each one carves her/his own way to deal with such situations and keep negativity at bay.

The most important thing is to never give up under such conditions as depression in life. If we keep fighting and aim towards success, no failure can deter us for long. That is where each of the thirty-one chapters of this fantastic book keeps conveying from time to time. Each chapter intrigues and prompts to introspect. That way the book is a must read for all youth and parents, especially. On a second thought, I think everyone should read this book.

Being a teacher there have been many instances in my life where I have seen students sink into depression and helplessness. They reach to an extent where they see no way out of their problems. This makes them surrender totally and ultimately stop trying to find the way out of the maze.

At times, it is their friends or peers that have an involvement in such situations. Another important factor that can bring youth to this corner is pressure from parents. Though time has changed and parents are much liberal now, but there have been many instances when a young boy or girl is rejected in the family because of various reasons. That rejection causes negative impacts in life. And at time it reaches to an extent where suicide seems the only way out to be away from such situations.

The Story of a Suicide by Sriram Ayer is woven so artistically to create a kind of situation in front of the reader with a set of pointers at the end of every chapter. That set of pointers is a unique feature in this book. These pointers help in realizing the crux of real life where similar kinds of situations arise.

These situations like social anxiety, peer pressure, cyber-bullying, bullying, sexual harassment, rape etc. are such that the victim starts living under guilt. This starts drifting him away from life. This book motivates  and helps to stay away from such guilt and harbor positivism.

An Old World Charm!

Zonal War Winner EAST Zone

~~~
Two roads diverged in a wood,
And I took the one less travelled by.
The one classic line from The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost always finds relevance in various walks of life. What if we were to take it on face value, quite literally?
Any avid traveller would prefer to take the offbeat and unseen path to embark on an adventurous journey. I am no different. However, the destinations which fascinate me on home turf in India are the ones which are yet to be visited by me!
Not aplenty, I must say as only the acclaimed 'Seven Sisters' and the 'Western Frontier' lie unexplored on the Indian map by Yours Truly.
If I were to choose my most fascinating city from among the picturesque Seven Sisters, it would have to be Darjeeling hands-down!
If I were to elucidate my most favorite characteristics of the city, I would classify it under the parameters of Design, Drive, and Connect.
Design: Given a chance, who would choose to discard the luring sight of snow-laden peaks overlooking a quaint hill town? Add to that the ever-expansive tea gardens sloping on rolling hills, orchids, pine cones, rhododendrons, and a cute Himalayan toy train whistling, while earmarking its way through the mountains. Bliss, right?
Drive: Road trips are always amazing and the one from Bagdogra to Darjeeling, known as the trip over Hill Cart Road (NH 55) is no exception. It is as scenic as can be and the three-and-a-half hours long journey is sheer pleasure. From a township and market area to a University campus to a tranquil river flowing below a bridge to the vastness of green fields and the snow caps of mountains to a few shrines and cottages at a distance to a well-guarded military area to being in the middle of an unmindful herd of cattle left on their own on the road, grazing to their heart's content - this route has it all and is said to leave one craving for more.
The rustic village area then makes way for a vast green stretch of tea gardens running parallel to the road for miles on both sides, complemented by sky-high peaks, which makes for an impressionable sight. After one has driven uphill for a while, there is a point towards the right from where one is able to witness  a breathtaking view of the Siliguri plains below. The sight of two rivers, Teesta, to the left and Balasun to the right - flowing side by side at a distance - is soothing, to say the least.
Connect: At the mention of this parameter, I can think of nothing, but the Toy Train as it is lovingly christened and which has been the romantic heart of Darjeeling that has touched everybody who has witnessed this paradise. Introduced in 1881, connecting Siliguri with Darjeeling through a narrow gauge line, it helped cut down the time it took to for commuters by bullock cart and horse carriages along the Hill Cart Road. Of course, the city is well connected to the other six of its 'siblings' - the other six states of the East and it goes without saying that the East is a jewel in the Indian crown.
Luxurious Comfort In My City...
The first Win of 2016 at IndiB comes around as a gratification from Cleartrip! :)
Cleartrip IndiBlogger Contest Winner
~~~

Everybody's welcome here
Everybody welcome to my city
We ain't got no worries here
I know you're gonna like it in my city
You know you got a friend in me
You ain't gonna wanna leave

~~~
Surprisingly enough, this chorus from Priyanka's single rings true, every time I am prompted by a fellow blogger, or for that matter, any tourist who's exploring my city, Delhi to let them in on the experience of a resident.
Now is the age of reviews. Categorically for the Travel industry - logistics, experiences, memories - all rely largely on word of mouth.
The other day, my better half, Mr. J was busy boasting of a new FAM trip he had been invited to. Excitedly, he sat down, listing the regions he had, left to leave a footprint on, encompassing the Indian soil.
The Seven Sisters,
The Peninsula Focal,
Western Islands, Noble,
And, My Ignorant Mister!
The Seven Sisters of the East, the Central state of Madhya Pradesh and the Western islands of Lakshadweep were those left unexplored. Leave aside the trip in question, he had started day-dreaming of these picturesque locations soon enough.
~~~

Well, it ought to be me to burst his bubble, ain't it?
I added another city's name, much to his surprise!

It should not take you long to comprehend that he would be taken aback by the mention of only one such city, and that would be our capital city, and hometown - New Delhi.

Why, I was quick to question - 'Are you well versed with your own city, leave alone other regions of the country?'

An even quicker Yes from him prompted me to drag him into the ring. :D

We embarked on an intellectual city tour of sorts, thereafter. Multiple rapid fire rounds centered around the A to Z of Delhi were discussed.

Out of the many points of discussion, one of them was about the extensive variety of hotels in and around the city.

He very conveniently drew a parallel between regions of the country and areas of Delhi.

Since the Eastern, Western and Central frontiers of the country were untouched, he prompted me to choose my three best hotels, In My City - one from each cardinal direction in the city.

It wasn't so difficult as I resorted to surfing the ClearTrip App on my smartphone! :)

It was as easy as choosing the city, and sorting the hotels, basis locality.

I arrived at my best list and ousted my better half, quite easily.

  • Kempinski Ambience Hotel, Maharaja Surajmal Road
  • Taj Palace Hotel, Diplomatic Enclave
  • Radisson Blu, Paschim Vihar

These three hotels located in East, Central and West Delhi, respectively offer that desired amalgamation of comfort and luxury when opting for a stay In My City...

Luxurious Comfort, as I like to call it is what is #KuchHatke

The Taj Palace is my most favorite. If you would wish to let go of yourself, and indulge in some royal pampering for yourself and your loved ones, Taj Palace would be the hotel to put your heart to.

Classy interiors and a regal ensemble are what imparts that elegance to a premier property in the heart of Delhi. Top-notch location with top-notch amenities, and catering to each guest as one of their own. What else could one wish for?

I would personally recommend a dining experience at Kafe Fontana, where a burst of colors is an aesthetic treat while the aroma of good food and the edge of live cooking add zing and zest to what satiates your appetite.

~~~
The Kempinski Ambience would be the most preferred choice if putting up in East Delhi. This property has been tastefully set up within close proximity of the Yamuna Sports Complex to provide easy access to the Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple.
The luxurious recreational facilities at Kempinski Ambience take you on a journey of tranquility and peace. Take some time off to relax in the pool or soothe your senses at the Shanaya Spa, indulging in Asian and European therapies.
~~~

Radisson Blu, on the other hand, embodies what the perfect location for a hotel should be. It scores on all given parameters - being pocket-friendly, proximity to shopping hubs, boasting of prim and proper facilities, and providing an opportunity for gourmet indulgence, in the form of Cupcakes

Yes, surely the edible ones - rather gourmet ones, being offered at the in-house Pastry Shop - sweet and savory delights!

Moreover, the elegant designs of a Neo-Gothic era, Radisson's majestic decor is a perfect blend of ancient splendour and modern appeal. A harmonious blend of contemporary design and upscale exteriors is what would appeal to the senses, here.

~~~
Who would possibly miss to applaud such tasteful selections in keeping with the modern yet archaic outlook of the city of New Delhi? Given a chance, I too would want to plan a day's escapade to these Luxuriously Comfortable Hotels In My City...
Mr. J was clearly amazed when I had opted the best of Three Worlds while matching up to the tasteful exuberance of luxurious, yet comfortable properties In My City...
So, when are you visiting? :)
Everybody's welcome here
Everybody welcome to my city
We ain't got no worries here
I know you're gonna like it in my city
You know you got a friend in me
You ain't gonna wanna leave
My First Expert!
My First Expert - Runner up!
~~~

Mother.

An angel on Earth in the guise of a woman.

Tender, loving, caring, protective.

Rock-strong, determined, confident, graceful.

~~~
An epitome of strength, courage, beauty and elegance who nurtures her child endearingly.
My Mother is no less than a superwoman for me.
Her pearls of wisdom, her experienced outlook towards life and her balanced persona have made me the woman I am today.
A child can never be thankful enough to the selflessness that her mother possesses.
It is impossible for me as a Mother, to imbibe all her qualities into myself, for my Daughter.
But, as they, imitation is the best form of flattery.
As long as I'm able to emulate the mannerisms of my Mother as a parent, I'm happy.
It is in these emulations that my Mother is with us, not in physicality but in her emotions.
~~~

A mother's relationship with the child is established with the advent of the first of those most blissful nine months.

It grows deeper, stronger, resolute, day after day, and year after year.

A daughter-mother duo complements each other in every aspect and are each other's comrades in the best of celebrations and the worst of catastrophes.

My earliest memory - nestled in her arms
Oh, learning to fall, rise, trotting, walking
Trusting her as my only angel from Heaven
Hearing, telling, sharing all stories, secrets
Engaging in moments of joy, sorrow, surprise
Reveling in her, she is God Almighty in guise

I was moved. So much so, that I was compelled to ponder - What if this was to be a true scenario?
What if the bearers of Mother Earth's anguish were to call out to us, with all might and shove all those adversities, in our face? :o

After all, the proceedings of events in today's time call for it, in a very unwelcoming way, though.
We wouldn't be happy if these words turned to actions, certainly not!

We, homo sapiens, or humans are a peculiar species. The early man stumbled on rocks, to learn to create fire.
He foraged on and utilized leaves and meat skin to cloth himself and satiate his hunger.

Gradually, he started to practice the art of being an agriculturist, reaping what he sowed, which were the fruits of his blood and sweat. He experienced bliss under the cool shade of sheltering trees amid the sweltering sun.

Early man had to master the art of 'Survival of the Fittest' in order to explore the soil he was inhabiting. He had to practice and substantiate for himself and his kinfolk, the concept of sustainable living.

Gradually, the vulnerable, naive ape turned into an intelligent, sophisticated man.

~~~
Every day, we hear scores of news bulletins announcing, proclaiming to the world, the adverse effects of the disappearing green cover over the face of our Earth, of the ill-effects of global warming, which are setting base to uproot us from our very existence, and to prefix a 'Late' with 'Mankind' and hold a mass funeral.
Yet, it does not baffle us enough. It isn't unsettling enough that the face of mankind has embraced a certain form of 'Reverse Engineering' to make the same intelligent man lose control over his gray cells and wreck havoc in his own territory! :(
Yet, man learned to chop off the same branch which he was seated upon. Yet, man learned to exploit the pool of resources, nature's bounty had provided him with and then complain of scarcity.
Selfishness and greed took over kindheartedness and giving. Man, knowingly or unknowingly was vehemently marching on a path which lit his own pyre!
~~~

Humans are creatures who cut trees, make paper, and write on the same paper, 'Save Trees'.

Ironically, we don't learn!

We fail to realize that it may be earning someone his means to bread and butter, when he decides to cut trees, but in turn he also resolves to rob millions on the face of the Earth of their lives, some day or the other.

~~~
We fail to acknowledge or respond to the numerous cries of despair from an agonized Mother Earth.
We proclaim that we are constantly doing our 'bit', even I do at times, but the truth is that just like it is perpetually impossible for a child to repay the debts of his mother, so is it seemingly difficult for us as a human to repay the debts of Mother Earth, if I may write so.
It is a matter of self-pride and a feel-good factor associated with the perspective of having done something for the world we inhabit. It is indeed blissful to experience that kind of a contentment.
The joy of splashing feet in the puddles of rainwater, or plucking ripe fruit from the orchard's trees or even playing with the raw, earthen soil, to uncover it, dig deep, follow the snail's trail and plant a tiny seed to observe it sprout into a plant and flourish into a tree as a child, is ever empowering.
We've to now time-travel to our childhood and those unselfish explorations and innocent treasures, to rediscover ourselves as Nature's Comrades.
As a science teacher, as a conscientious citizen of my country and as a responsible daughter of Mother Earth, I have taken a pledge.
I've taken a conscious decision, to embark on a journey.
I've taken a step.
Onward To A...
Gauging The Severity Of The Matter,
Renewing A Parched Bond With Earth.
Enriching Fruits Of  Bliss, Lay Scatter,
Entitling Us To Rendezvous Of Rebirth.
Now Is The Time To Take That Call...
Yearn For The Dream World To Be True,
Accomplish The Dream, Aim For Reality.
Tap That Essence Of Repaying The Due,
Reap Gratitude, As You Sow Humility.
Adore Replenishment, Give It Your All...
Have you stepped up to the responsibility yet?
I hope you do.
Of Mannerisms, Defensive Driving And Road Safety...
New Year's Eve Surprise, well timed by IndiBlogger...
Skull Candy Headphones, coming over...
~~~

June 21, 2013
12 AM
New Delhi

Dear Diary

Today is the day, my daughter turns 18. She will finally be a Major.
Today is the day she embraces adulthood and its responsibilities.

Today is the day, we'll open a separate bank - account for her, without the 'Under Guardianship' tag, among other surprises.
Above all, four days from now, her Driving Lessons begin.
June 25, 2013 is going to be a big day.

In a country like India, and especially in a city like New Delhi, it is a herculean task to maneuver through the roads, safe and sound.

Stepping out on Delhi roads, with their automobile, is bothersome for everyone, and road safety is of utmost importance for times when you are behind the wheel.

One has to learn to master the skill of careful, disciplined and safe driving, over the years. After all, Practice Makes Perfect.

So, when it comes to her, and the factor of Road Safety, I will make sure she learns to make the right moves on the road, because for my family and myself...

Safety Begins With Me!

~~~
When behind the wheel, it is not just one person's safety, that is a matter of concern. The matter of concern must be the safety of our own self, as well as the of ones around us - all motorists and pedestrians.
After all, Life does not come Cheap. It is an invaluable gift from the Almighty, that ought to be cherished and kept secure, at all times.
~~~

Keeping this in mind, I've decided that the next five days will be spent in a constructive manner, to recall and put to practice with the A-B-C-D of proper mannerisms, when on the road, as a person behind the wheel.

I'll write to you, after I train her properly. Bye for now, Dear Diary. :)

~~~
Let us begin with the training, shall we?
This Safety Driving MasterClass stars two leading ladies...
Yours Truly, and...
~~~

Hello Everyone. I'm the one who is turning 18 today. I'm the lady's daughter and will be her sincere student in this Safety Driving MasterClass.

I'll be learning the A-B-C-D of Road Safety and safe driving from my Mother, which will assist me to procure my Learner's License, successfully. Inviting you to garner some knowledge and polish it, too...

I believe you're well versed with the lady who authors this blog, aren't you?

Over to you, Mom...

~~~
Poonam : Let us begin with the basics of the trade...
The basics of Road Mannerisms are something you must be thorough with. Those are the rules which have been repeated ever since you were a kid.
  1. The Red - Yellow - Green GuidelineRed to Stop, Yellow to Wait, Green to Go. The colors must be well coordinated and must not be jumbled up, by a careless you, at any cost.
  2. The Seat - belt is a must at all times. The belt that holds you back, is for your own good.
  3. Never talk on the phone, while behind the wheel. The Phone A Friend may as well end your lifeline.
  4. For everyone out there, Drinking and Driving do NOT form a miscible solution, at any time, and at any cost, whatsoever.
  5. Do not resort to unfair means, for you are attempting the Exam of Life. Obey the law at all times. If you don't, the consequences will be grave, at all times.
Charu : The five fundamentals of Road Safety, which form the checklist for an alert citizen on the Road, Mom. More like five fingers to a hand... :)
And, oh yes, you must also stop behind the Zebra Crossing, while pedestrians must cross the road only using the Black and White Stripes on the Road.
~~~

Poonam : Learning fast, aren't you?  Let us proceed to the basics of driving, perfect for an amateur. I believe you know the positioning of the A-B-C i.e. Accelerator, Brake and Clutch. Also, the Gear Box, and how you must change gears.

As an alert citizen, and a Defensive Driver, there is a C3 - K - A - C code, as I call it.

Care
Courtesy
Consideration...

For other motorists and pedestrians.

Knowledge, of traffic rules and regulations.

Alertness, for illegal acts and erroneous driving of other motorists.

Concern for accident prevention.

~~~
At all times, you must obey the following traffic rules, when behind the wheel.
  1. Keep to your left. Allow traffic in the opposite direction to pass you on the right. Overtake only on the right. Overtaking on the left is permitted only when the vehicle in front is about to turn right.
  2. When being overtaken or passed by another vehicle, do not increase your speed or try and prevent the other vehicle.
  3. Slow down when approaching intersections, road junctions or road corners. Enter the intersection or junction, carefully.
  4. When entering a main road from a junction, give way to other vehicles, proceeding along the main road.
  5. Drive slowly when passing a procession, or when passing road repairs.
  6. When turning to the left, drive close to the left hand side of the road.
  7. When turning to the right, draw to the center of the road, stop at the intersection, if necessary, then move to the left hand side of the road you're about to enter.
~~~

There is a Safe Following Distance, which you must maintain.

Stay one car length behind for every 15 k.m.p.h speed.

This is much like the 'One Arm Distance' you used to maintain in your P.E. Drills at school, isn't it? ;)

The cars here, are like your peers at school...

~~~
Charu: Great going, Mom. Please guide me, as to how I must prepare myself to prevent collisions, or accidents, from my side, too.
Poonam: Good question. That was what was next, in the MasterClass too. Did you sneak in to read through my lesson plan?
Charu: No... :D
Poonam: Anyways. Moving On...
Just like your Mathematical Proofs, and their Cases...
In case of :-
A Possible Collision With The Vehicle Ahead
Stay alert and expect the driver ahead of you, to brake without warning.
Start stopping sooner. When you know you will have to stop, slow down gradually. Do not wait for the last straw.
A Possible Collision With The Vehicle Behind
Signal your intentions well before you slow or stop.
Keep clear of drivers who are 'bumper chasers'. Slow down and encourage them to pass.
A Possible Collision With The Approaching Vehicle
Stay Left. Do not crowd the center line. If the oncoming driver crosses it, warn him by honking or by using your dipper.
A Possible Collision With The Vehicle At An Intersection
Look both ways. As you approach an intersection, look first to the right to make sure that the other traffic is yielding the right of way, then to the left. Keep checking for any unusual action, on either side.
Watch out for curves. Slow down before entering a curve, then pick up speed as the curve permits.
Don't fight for right of way. You have the right of way only when you can see that it is safe, regardless of stop signs.
A Possible Collision With The Overtaking Vehicle
Check the rear. Before you change lanes, check your rear-view mirror and glance back to make sure your blind-spot is clear. Use your indicator light and move only when the lane is clear.
~~~

Charu: Points noted, Mom. How should I infer from the hand-signs and mannerisms of the traffic policemen / police-women?

Poonam: Brilliant question! Here is the resolution to your query...

10 hand-signs from the traffic police personnel and their interpretations, listed alongside, for your reference, everyone...

~~~
Charu: Thanks Mom. Any other topics left to cover, from your lesson plan? :D
Poonam: Yes. You are a motorist when you take to the wheel. But you also don the hat of a pedestrian. These are the two roles, you play interchangeably.
There are, what I call, The Many Faces Of A Pedestrian.
These are the mannerisms of a pedestrian which you must NOT portray. For the times when you are a motorist on the road, you must keep a vigilant eye for such pedestrians.
  1. The Sprinter :- You've seen him often. But just barely. In rush-hour traffic, he will sprint across the road, expecting YOU to SLOW DOWN.
  2. The Genie :- Pass a stationary or slow moving vehicle, and he will spring out at you, before either of you can see other. Sometimes a Genie may be a young kid in hurry to get across, or an office worker, stepping out from behind a bus. SLOW DOWN when passing such a vehicle.
  3. Houdini :- He thinks he can emerge from any engrossing situation. You will find him in the middle of traffic, trying to escape to the other side, by squeezing himself between cars.
  4. The Spook :- He steps out for a stroll at night. He is beyond your field of view. If you wish to have a ghost encounter, you must stop within the distance you can see.
  5. Answering Machine :- He carries his conversation onto the road, even while crossing. His is a one-track mind, and it is NOT on the traffic. Wield your horn and give him plenty of room.
  6. The Band Of Merry Men :- The biggest problem on the road can be the 'tiny tots'. Chasing the cricket ball, across the road is their favorite activity. SLOW DOWN whenever you see them, and give them room.
~~~

Charu: Thanks for a perfect Safety Driving MasterClass, Mom. You are the best teacher ever. I'll ace that Driving Test and surprise you with my Learner's License, on the 25th! :D

Poonam: Go and make me proud! :)

~~~
The next diary entry in my Dear Diary, was the one that accounted for how Charu procured her Learner's License with elan! :)
~~~

This post, on the blog is like a guide, for all the motorists out there, isn't it?

If we all make a promise to ourselves, that we'll abide by these guidelines to the best of all abilities and at all times, India can be made  motorist - friendly and the roads would be safer to drive on, for sure.

~~~
The content for this post has been referred to from a 'Defensive Driving for Safer Motoring' guide issued by the Traffic Police of Delhi, procured by me, 15 years back, from the Traffic Park, New Delhi. The images on the blog, carrying the watermark, have also been sourced from the same.
The Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., conducts the Nissan Safety Driving Forum (NSDF) in India as part of its safety driving promotion activities. The program began as an annual activity in 2012. In its initial phase it covered three main Indian cities – New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai – and since then has gradually expanded to several additional cities across India.
This year, NSDF would reach 8 new cities – Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Jaipur, Vadodara, Nagpur, Chennai, Mangalore and Kochi. The overall reach and engagement levels have phenomenally grown and NSDF has effectively reached close to 2 lakh citizens.
