Of Evolving Workplaces And Technological Advancements

What?

The second edition of SHRM Tech’16 Conference & Exposition

When?

Wednesday and Thursday, April 20-21

Where?

Renaissance Hotel, Mumbai

Technology been a driving force to the brainstorming sessions of mankind. Necessity is the mother of invention and has always been the motivation to achieving breakthroughs in various fields of interest across the human strata. Technology has been a catalyst to enhancing the productivity of our being.

More or less, technology has completely revolutionized our ideologies. Our daily routine is all about operating in conjunction with technological influences on our lifestyle. Technology has revamped our day-to-day activities by incorporating a high degree of convenience into it.

The fact which however, reigns supreme is that the availability of land, labor, and capital is of no use in the absence of human resource. Though it is true that the latter exploits the former to their optimum, there is also no denying the fact that the former three are pretty powerless if they are to be on their own, as it is just a bank of resources with zero utilization.

 ~~~
The other day, I came to read about the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). With its Motto of 'Leading People. Leading Organizations', SHRM is recognized for devoting itself to human resource management. The association has recently announced the agenda for the second edition of ‘HR Technology Conference & Exposition, which is deemed to be an influential conclave of people, business and technology.
By tapping the potential of the triple of Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom, this conference aims to provide a common platform to more than 650 delegates from organizations across all sectors.
The two day conference being conducted next week boasts of highly constructed sessions, panel discussions, and keynote addresses, wherein industry experts will debate and discuss the pertinent question of being able to bridge the gap between HR and technology.
A few of the illustrious personalities on the Global as well as Indian strata, who have consented to gracing the exposition are:
  • Jason Averbook, CEO, Thought Leader & Author;
  • Anuranjita Kumar, Managing Director, Chief Human Resources Officer, Citi South Asia;
  • Viresh Oberaoi, Founder CEO and MD, Mjunction Services Ltd.;
  • Dr. Sumit D Chowdhury, Founder CEO 'Gaia Smart Cities', Business Leader, Author & Motivational Speaker, Coach;
  • Yuvraj Baghwala, VP- HR, Genpact;
  • Kevin Freitas, Director, Global Recruiting & Rewards – InMobi;
  • Nishchae Suri, Partner & Head-People & Change Advisory- KPMG, India;
  • Pradeep Mukerjee, Former CEO & Country Head - Mercer Consulting Pvt. Ltd;
  • Unmesh Pawar, Global MD, Talent Acquisition – Accenture;
  • Jaspreet Bakshi, Sr. VP, HR & Regional Head – HR, People Services India;
  • George Oommen, Director - HR, Technology & Process Consulting; Sameer Khanna, VP and Head of HR, Region India – Ericsson;
  • Manu Narang, VP, HR - American Express;
  • Vikas Joshi, Sr. Director, HR Transformation - PepsiCo's Asia, Middle East & North Africa;
  • Sunder Ramachandran, Head, Training Function - Pfizer India;
  • Abhijit Bhaduri, Chief Learning Officer, Wipro Ltd.
The conference aims to focus its attention to, and gain a broader perspective on how HR technologies are impacting company bottom lines, while applauding HR Innovation in the age of Technology.
Also on the radar would be how it is imperative for HR Tech to be about user experience, while observing how human resource management is becoming increasingly more technology-based, and how Technology is being employed as an HR Strategy.
 ~~~

Panel discussions are also to be held on varied topics of technological interest of the likes of Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things And… People, and Wearable Technologies.

Ms. Achal Khanna, CEO, SHRM India Operations, while announcing the conference, said:

After receiving an overwhelming response in the last year’s conference, we proudly announce our second edition of HR Tech Conference. Technology is driving HR Profession at a great pace, be it, mobile, analytics, cloud (SMAC), or Software as a Service (SaaS), video, Big Data, gamification, MOOCs, or the Internet of things (IoT). It is a perfect time for HR professionals to unite and discuss the way forward for an extensive use of technology in HR domain to be at par with the fastest changing business world. SHRM Tech Conference is a perfect platform for the HR professionals to share their experiences and connect with the leading experts through transformational sessions and workshops, based on leading and emerging technologies in HR space.”

Besides more than fifteen uniquely constructed knowledge sessions and panel discussions, there will be live product demos where one can get a real-feel of the technologies that will redefine work processes in organisations.

I would advise corporate professionals in Mumbai to register themselves as Delegates for the Expo as it seems quite a promising line-up and exchange of ideas and had I been a corporate myself, I would have registered for such a brilliant conference.

PR, The IndiBlogger Way!

What?

Launch of IndiPR, by India's leading and most loved Blogging Community, IndiBlogger

When?

Friday, April 8

Where?

Over the World Wide Web, and Indian Blogging horizon! :)

The other day, I overheard a conversation in the Delhi Metro. As always, observations in any means of public transport make for interesting chronicles, over here or even otherwise.

Blog.
Sounds like a familiar word, doesn't it, nowadays?

Yeah!
It's THE catchphrase now, Dude!
I have one, too.
Do you?

Yes.
I have a Weblog.

Weblog?
What's that, mate?
We - blog: Do you have a co-authored blog?

Me: *Too amazed to respond*
        *Should've better been on my own*

 ~~~
Contemplating on what I had just heard, it dawned upon me that I had been an audience to the observance of the adage 'Ignorance is Bliss', yet again. Here was Yours Truly, who is a genuine blogger, and here were these simpletons, discussing 'THE' catchphrase, in their opinion.
There has been a perpetual debate over being or not being a Blogger in the true sense. By true sense, I aim to refer to individuals who 'blog' not just for the sake of it but those who pursue it as a driving force, which motivates them to express themselves and express themselves well.
But then, we live in a country where the sense of expression and the sensibility of freedom - of expression, or otherwise - is so abused, that it is better to maintain a steady stand.
While there's no denying the fact that slow and steady, we have come to acknowledge Blogging and the Art (no less than Science, though!) that it is, considering the mushrooming we have here, we cannot just turn a blind eye to the fact that there remain MANY such people who consider it as a hobby, pastime, or such.
While Blogging is a life-science in itself, having helped me appreciate the abundance of creative expression within others and myself, and there can be a thesis of sorts on that too, but more on that some other time.
 ~~~

Fridays are meant for relaxation, and the one that just went by was no different. As soon as I accessed my email that day, I heaved a sigh of relief. I was caught unaware by my blogging community, IndiBlogger, and their naive but re-introduced Kiddo, IndiPR

As is the norm with initiatives, this particular 'New Kid On The Block' was not so new to me, but I guess it had just returned from its summer vacation of sorts, with a makeover for itself. And, boy! Was I impressed, or was I Impressed?

IndiPR (formerly IndiOne) had been unveiled by IndiBlogger! :D

This mail in my inbox lent a reassurance - There is Hope... For Bloggers...

~~~
If none else, my fellow bloggers would identify with the fact that Blogging and being a Blogger is no child's play. And, IndiBlogger as a bloggers' platform, takes their act seriously.
Well, one may or may not choose to keep their blog abuzz with the latest happenings in their niche, by the means of attending events and blogging about the same. That comes along with a fair share of PRs by PRs. :D
PRs, that are pressing on us, bloggers to release those PRs by the means of our digital selves, more often than not, for mere peanuts. PRs, that fail to realize that Blogging ain't monkeying around!
In accordance with their core ideology and in order to toss those mundane and run-of-mill Press Releases into the bin, while resolving to make it known that this pursuit is not to be taken for granted, IndiBlogger has come up with IndiPR.
That for me, is PR, the IndiBlogger way.
~~~

IndiBlogger says they are 2007-Forever. With each passing day, month and year, IndiBlogger has been growing - by the means of being populated by Indians who once wished to establish themselves as Bloggers, Indians who are at the top of their game, and Indians who are gradually learning the ropes as well. IndiBlogger is Mini India, I believe, mirroring the potpourri of creativity! :)

Their growth has not just been in terms of quantity - statistics - six digit figures or such, but in the terms of quality that each individual's perspective on various topics and genres of interest.

IndiPR, thus comes across as yet another milestone, wherein a blogger has the creative freedom to blog about an organisation's newly launched product or initiative. While acting as an effective intermediary to diminish the communication gap between Businesses and quality Bloggers aka Influencers, I believe IndiPR redefines B2B! :)

The swanky new A.I.T.E. has piqued my curiosity as it incorporates Artificial Intelligence into itself. The ‘Automated Influencer Targeting Engine’ as it likes to be addressed, proceeds to accept applications, and automatically shortlists bloggers, for Press Releases uploaded by businesses, based on various factors including internal rankings. Their system just needs the Press Release and the rest would be history, Karthik DR, Co-founder & Business Head at IndiBlogger says. :)

Upon being shortlisted and accepting the Project (Yes, one can Decline as well), apart from rejoicing as the first reaction, the influencers are to publish their articles, choosing to either mirror the release or add their own element to it.

While I am enjoying being a 'beta tester' of sorts to A.I.T.E. at the receiving end, I am waiting for it to learn with time and tailor itself to the blogger's niche or their performance with respect to a particular article. (A.I.T.E. rates bloggers secretly, y'know!)

Renie Ravin, Founder and CEO of IndiBlogger, opines that in a way, one could be writing about the next Google without even realizing its immense potential.

Gradually, I am being told that IndiPR would not be restricted only to SEO and content marketing but also expand to creative assignments, invitations to attend the trendiest launch events and being privy to the latest news on the planet. That's like a Blogger's Secret Society, albeit open to all Bloggers! :)

~~~
I'm all set for my experience with IndiPR and A.I.T.E. as a Blogger, an IndiBlogger.
Are You? :)
~~~

These Pearls Are Taking Creative Business By Storm...

Top post on IndiBlogger.in, the community of Indian Bloggers

~~~
I could never have imagined that imparting education could be such an innovative, involving and interesting foray, until the day I observed a glowing smile on the faces of students I met. The same, pure selfless happiness was to be observed on the faces of the faculty members I met. This is probably the best example of a win-win situation.
The students not only got enough opportunities and liberty to learn and enhance their individual knowledge banks but also, ample innovation and freedom to explore newer and unvisited worlds in their respective fields.
All the credit goes to the teaching methodology and a nurturing environment which has been adopted by them across all the courses, across all their campuses. That is the real reason behind the global reputation of this Academy in the arena of fashion, design, and creativity.
I was among the privileged ones to witness #Portfolio15 - a sea of talent, creativity, innovation, out-of-box thinking, and fun - by polished Pearlites of the well known, Pearl Academy, formerly known as Pearl Academy Of Fashion, organized at the NSIC Exhibition Ground, Okhla, New Delhi.
When we talk of creativity, it is mostly limited, focusing in one direction. For a wonderful change, we witnessed the meaning of creativity going beyond its rudimentary definition. For a change, creativity could be witnessed all around us, universally in all the directions, that day. There were an unmatched energy and zest around, and a superb bonding between the students and the teaching staff.
The moment I reached the venue there were barriers right within the immediate periphery beyond which I was not allowed to take my vehicle. The burning sun had me worried when I realized that from that point on, I would have to walk along the dominating ball of heat. To my relief, the Academy had run a shuttle service for the masses' convenience.
Proclaiming myself as a Blogger and grabbing the exclusive Media Invite was as hassle free as reaching the venue. The moment I entered, I was greeted by the faculty in-charge of the four 'Schools of Pearl'. I was acquainted with a kiosk familiarizing me with the School Of Foundation, meant for the first-year students to grasp the world outside their cocoons, and discover their inherent creativity.
This funky bicycle is what welcomed me into a world of out-of-box designs...
In my opinion, all the Schools are quite interestingly and aptly named, in tune with their theme and strategic grooming of the respective students studying in these schools. It was astonishing to see more than five hundred projects on display by the Final Year students, who were ready to take the Fashion Fraternity by storm. These projects are a part of the proceedings for the fulfillment of the requirements of their course I was told, where they need to put their best foot forward, demonstrating all their skills in a polished and innovative manner.
The first day of a three-day long #Porfolio15  had over fifteen hundred school-going students from around thirty top schools of Delhi - NCR, attending an exclusive series of workshops on 'Design Immersion Experience'.  The students who attended these workshops were quite thrilled to familiarize themselves with this new and unexplored world of creativity and design.
They were seen enjoying the sessions and absorbing the insights with complete enthusiasm. These workshops were conducted in various streams like Product Design, Photography, Styling, and so on. It was the expertise of Pearl Academy that was mesmerizing the visiting students and I am sure most of them would have been thinking of joining this wonderful world once they cope with their school studies. That is the magic of Pearl Academy.
Sneha's tea-set was refreshingly geometric...
This is what the School Of Creative Business had to offer...
On the same lines, the second day was set to welcome a special guest – Manish Malhotra – as Guest of Honor. He had a number of things planned for the time he was going to spend at #Portfolio15, during the latter half of the day. He had to address the final year students after going through the effort each of them had put in their projects. Pearl's final year students were seen having the time of their life when they got a chance, with not only Manish Malhotra addressing them face-to-face but also to grab a memorabilia - a 'group selfie' with the renowned designer.
The students were assigned groups to walk to the stage and grab their moment with Manish, and all this was in such a disciplined manner that there was not a single moment of chaos or disorganization.
After that, in the evening, there were two fashion shows, one before the Guest of Honor's arrival, and the other, in his presence. Both the shows were fantastic and it was quite good to note that the creativity demonstrated by students had taken him by a pleasant surprise.
 Not only Manish, but also the ace designer duo Shantanu-Nikhil were present at the event and were all praises for this ocean of talent, that has been churning Pearls in the era of Creative Business for over a good two decades! :)
Of Love And Friendship, lunchboxANDyou...
Top post on IndiBlogger.in, the community of Indian Bloggers
~~~

~~~
The month of February spells love.
The month of February spells dearness.
The second month of the year belongs to Cupid, after all.
~~~

However, love in the month of February does not necessarily have to be love for your spouse or for that 'special one' in your life.

For me, this is not the notion, at least.

~~~
Love for my dear ones, in my opinion, does not require a special month, for it to be celebrated.
I love my family, and I celebrate this mutual emotion with them, all year long.
~~~

 For us, Valentine's Day and its preceding week pass along without much pomp and show.

We, at home plan Cupid's Day so that the entire family gathers around, in round table fashion, for us all to enjoy an unpretentious, cordial, and homely dinner, or even lunch, sometimes.

This has been an annual ritual, so to say.

It is not only about a family lunch or dinner.

Each of us writes a personalized, hand-written note to that one family member, whose special memories have made the past year lovelier.

Also, we are to exchange those notes over Dessert, to make the memories, as well as the lingering pleasantness of taste, even memorable.

The dessert too, is special.

The 'From...' person prepares the dessert which is the 'To...' person's favorite.

Quite an unusual combination with the dessert and the note, you'd say.

In the end, each family member, has this sweet gesture and a special note, addressed to them, to cherish. :)

~~~
This time around, we plan to organize a lunch.
Speaking of lunch, the other day, I was flipping through those movie channels on TV.
As I chanced upon &Pictures, I was compelled to pause for a moment.
Why?
But of course, I chanced upon one of their adverts, announcing the Valentine's Day Premiere, of the BAFTA Nominee, The  Lunchbox, on Cupid's Day at 8.
It is one of the precious gems of Indian Cinema.
I have seen it in the past and am willing to spend a good two-and-a-half hours watching this masterpiece again too.
At the same time, my Twitter timeline was set abuzz by ANDPictures!
They had been tweeting, inviting people to share their Lunchbox stories and their love for food.
~~~

I wanted to send in my tweet too, but my tortoise - paced internet did not allow me too.

Nevertheless, my Eureka moment saved the day.

I couldn't send in my tweet to participate in this novel campaign.

That reminded me...

My love for food?

The lunch planned for Saturday!

The dishes for lunch had been taken care of, without a sweat.

But, I still hadn't decided the name which would fill in the blank ahead of 'To...' in my note!

Lunch...

Lunchbox...

The Lunchbox...

Yes!

Lunchbox it is!

~~~
Then and there, I connected the dots to visualize the family member for whom I'd be penning my personalized note!
I would be addressing this year's note...
To...
My Daughter...
Charu!
~~~

First things first, let me tell you that Charu's favorite food or favorite dessert, if you may call it, is Carrot Pudding, the humble गाजर का हलवा! But, for this year's special lunch, she has requested me for chocolate cupcakes.

So, chocolate cupcakes it shall be!

I suppose she won't mind Carrot Pudding too... ;)

~~~
Here's why I'm writing a note to Charu, this year...
  • For the past many years, my better half and I have been exchanging such notes on this day. This time, I wish to do something different. For a change, I would be writing a note to Charu, and she'd be writing it for her father. :)
  • This advert on &Pictures brought back pleasant memories. Memories of me packing lunch for her, in that cutesy little lunchbox to carry to school, at the advent of dawn, and of her relishing something home-made, something new in her lunchbox, every day.
    Sometimes, it used to be simple cheese sandwiches with her favorite cream biscuits as a side. On other occasions, she used to crave for her favorite Mushroom - Cashew nut gravy, coupled with home made Pulav. I even remember preparing Pasta for her, on multiple occasions. That was when she had to share it with her friends and boast of her mother's special dishes.
    This time, I wish to re-live those memories with her. At times, she used to save those biscuits from her box, to share with me, when she came back home. We used to share it over 'What happened in school, today?' sessions! :)
  • It will serve as the perfect surprise for her, if her favorite Carrot Pudding, or cupcakes come to her served in a similar lunchbox, for her to relish. I'm writing to her because I wish to witness that precious smile on her face. From ear-to-ear, timeless joy! :)
~~~

Don't you wish to have a look at what my personalized note says?

I'm sure you do...

Here, leaving it for you to read, too! :)

~~~
'Tis Valentine's, I've done something exceptional...
Moved away from the archaic concept of Love...
This time it's not about your father and me...
It's about YOU and me, to make you feel special! :)
To surprise you, this Lunchbox has arrived...
To make sure that your love for food too, is revived!
It has been ages - I've always been packing my love for you...
For you, to take with you, in a tiny box - What all do I not brew? ;)
An age-old cliche it is, regarding your Mom's extraordinary culinary skills...
माँ के हाथ का खाना, which always makes you smile, it brings back memorable stills...
Today I'm set to surprise you, with anecdotes of love and friendship...
Out of it all, that we've been sharing over food...
Today is meant to be special...
'Tis Valentine's, it's about me and the cupcakes in that tiny box...
It is about your lovable lunchboxANDyou! :)
I LOVE YOU! <3
~~~

I hope this brings a smile to her face, just the way I'm imagining it to be.

What do you think of my plan, for my daughter, this Valentine's?

I'll be glad to know of your opinion too. :)

~~~
'The  Lunchbox' Premieres on Valentine's Day at 8 PM on &pictures
It boasts of stellar performances by Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
It is a masterpiece by Ritesh Batra.
If you go by my word, you will love this movie too.
Be sure to watch it with your loved ones.
For...
Can you fall in love with someone you haven't met?
Bhopal : A Prayer For Rain...
2 December 1984.
Union Carbide Corporation.
Methyl Iso Cyanate.
Bhopal.
Madhya Pradesh.
~~~

30 Years.

Three Decades.

A Deadly Poison.

A Living Death.

~~~
The fateful night of 2-3 December 1984 left an indelible mark and countless scars on the face of humanity for generations to come.
To be mute remnants of a dark night in the truest sense of the word, for the perpetual suffering it had rendered to innocent civilians of the state capital of Madhya Pradesh - the 'heart' of India.
To be struck with those horrific facts and figures - when counting the number of bodies doesn't hold much significance - for each day, they're dying as they live through, pass through another day...
~~~

Touted as the world's worst industrial disaster, the Union Carbide India Limited Plant is where it all began.

40 tonnes of toxic MIC gas spewed death to kill thousands in their slumber on that night of December 2, 1984.

~~~
The 'Bhopal Gas Tragedy' as it is infamously called, is a heart-wrenching chapter in the history of India.
And, it was well necessary that this incident, be brought into the light, for the Youth of the Nation and the Indian audience at large, to garner understanding, of the What-When-Why-How of a lethal legacy.
~~~

With this idea in mind, Bhopal : A Prayer For Rain was born.

Director Ravi Kumar, teamed up with Ravi Walia of Rising Star Entertainment, to bring to us, the sorry - state of Bhopal, owing to the corrupt, and negligent officials at Union Carbide, backed up by the business - minded CEO, Warren Anderson

A Still From Inside The Cineplex.

~~~
The filming and presentation of a disaster of such gravity calls for an equally sensitive portrayal and direction by the actors and the Director alike.
And, Mr. Ravi Kumar has done just that.
Each of the actors on board, deliver their part effortlessly.
I could feel the sense of helplessness for the poverty stricken common man, Dilip, (portrayed by Raajpal Yadav) to continue working in such life-threatening situations as Carbide's.
I could hear the local journalist Motwani's (Kal Penn, inspired by the real life Bhopal journalist Mr. Rajkumar Keswani) earnest efforts to spread awareness on the 'time-bomb' that was ticking away in the heart of India.
I couldn't help but request the American journo, Eva, (Mischa Barton) not to leave.
I could sense the haunting despair in the widow Rekha's (Fagun Thakrar) eyes.
I could see how Roy, as a Security Officer, was pressured to comply to unwillingly compromise with the safety standards.
I couldn't help but condemn Chaudhari's corrupt ways. He made sure to check that the air - conditioning was deliberately shut off, even when MIC had to be maintained in freeze temperatures!
As for the liaison officer Shane, and the CEO Anderson (Martin Sheen), who form the key villainy, along with the CM of the state, they had a choice, to make.
Any antidote was not even given consideration as according to Anderson, only washing with water would suffice!
For them, Human Life Was Cheapest.
~~~

Apart from honest, true-to-the-frame portrayals, the pace at which the incidents unfolded, was steady.

The connect was established, one after another.

How Dilip, a rickshaw driver, landed a job at UCC...

How we were shown the rusty pipes and faulty machinery, the Tank 610, waiting to spell disaster...

How the lady's husband, a dear friend of Motwani's, lost his life to one drop of MIC, thus widowing her.

The lady who gleefully used to sport a new Sari, every week, owing to that man's respectable position at the factory, was now rendered in White, for the rest of her pitiable life.

How Motwani's efforts took the fast track, after he lost his friend to MIC - with 'Cherry Red' Blood.

How corruption had an upper hand, all this while, be it the key Indian official, Chaudhari at the Factory, or the liaison officer 'bribing' the Chief Minister.

The most hard - hitting of them all were the concluding moments of the film, wherein the tragedy unfolded, in a gruesome manner.

How Dilip lost his wife Leela, sister, son, Raju and himself to the lethal demon...

That too, at the time of his sister's wedding ceremony, for whom he had decided to make do with risks threatening his life, all the while, at Union Carbide.

The menace of Dowry and Poverty together, weighed heavy on Dilip's life.

How that dead man's soul haunted Dilip in the last moments of his life, with his ID badge in his hand, saying,

तू तो उसी दिन मर गया था, जिस दिन तू ने मेरी Uniform पहनी थी...

as it were his title that Dilip was promoted to, when he died of that accidental drop of MIC falling on his arm...

The final scenes of the Hamidia Hospital, with bodies strewn all over the city, down to present day, when the civilians are shown suffering of the perpetual illnesses, bestowed upon them by MIC, can prove to be a gut - wrenching sight, not meant for the faint hearted.

~~~
 Bhopal : A Prayer For Rain, is hard-hitting, to the point, and serves as the perfect medium for spreading awareness about the one incident, that has crippled us, as Indians, for generations to come...
The portrayal of the series of events is gripping, requiring you at the edge of your seat...
The performances are top-notch, with each actor seeping into the skin of the character, effortlessly...
The facts presented before the rolling of end credits, are soul-stirring and draw a parallel between reality and what has been successfully portrayed in the film.
The entire movie, is one, which ought not to be missed, as what happened in Bhopal, 30 years back, could happen elsewhere too.
The tragedy led to new laws to tighten regulations, but audits still elude many.
That Night...
A 'Plant' Ensured That...
It Made People 'Choke'! :(
That Night...
Union Carbide didn't unite, rather split the entire city of Bhopal into pitiable conditions...
