The Indira Gandhi International Airport has been the crowning glory of sorts for the capital city as it serves as Delhi NCR's principal civil aviation hub. It comes as no surprise that GMR Group led DIAL Consortium (Delhi International Airport Limited) is the force behind the smooth functioning of an airport that boasts of being the busiest in terms of passenger traffic for almost a decade now.
As a citizen of Delhi, it has been a pleasant experience to date as far as my airborne travels are concerned as IGIA has always portrayed a consumer-centric approach, with convenience and comfort from a consumer point-of-view being at the highest pedestal.
While the chic, yet thoughtfully designed interiors of T3 had been grabbing eyeballs ever since its inauguration in 2010, it is the newest addition to the DIAL family - the recently revamped and recommissioned T2 - that has garnered praise and appreciation from Delhiites.
Keeping robust passenger growth and upcoming airport expansion works in mind, Terminal 2 (T2) commenced operations on 29 October 2017. In tandem with the core philosophy of IGIA, a seamless experience for flyers is of utmost importance to DIAL.
The newly inaugurated Terminal 2 of IGIA features adequate check-in counters, X-ray machines, baggage reclaim belts, aerobridges and parking bays for aircraft.
A couple of days back, #ShiftingToT2 was in the news as IndiGo and SpiceJet were set to partially shift their operations from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 of IGIA with effect from 00:01 on March 25, 2018, in compliance with an Apex Court order, thus joining GoAir, which was the first airline to shift its entire operation to T2 in October 2017 itself.
While IndiGo's shift includes ten sectors, that of SpiceJet includes seven.
For IndiGo, making the switch are Flight No.s 6E 2000 to 6E 2999 i.e. destinations Amritsar, Bagdogra, Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Raipur, Srinagar, Udaipur, Vadodara, and Vishakhapatnam, while for SpiceJet, Flight No.s SG 8000 to SG 8999, encompassing Ahmedabad, Cochin, Goa, Gorakhpur, Patna, Pune, and Surat are relocating.
In line with Master Plan 2016 and to facilitate the growth at IGI Airport, DIAL had earlier proposed partial shifting of all three carriers to T2 until the completion of the expansion of T1.
A temporary move to ease the pressure of thriving traffic at T1, it will enable the expansion works at T1 effectively. T1 is set to be expanded from the current capacity of 20 million to 40 million per annum with twenty-two aerobridges, and state of the art infrastructure spanning all major areas of the airport i.e. Landside, Terminal and Airside proposed to be completed within four years.
Commenting on the development, I Prabhakara Rao (CEO-DIAL), was of the following opinion.
“We welcome IndiGo and SpiceJet to Terminal 2. This will enable us to start the expansion works at Terminal 1. During the expansion of Terminal 1, Terminals 2 and 3 will cater to the growing traffic over the next 3-4 years. DIAL would leave no stone unturned to make Delhi Airport a preferred Hub Airport of Asia. Our focus towards maintaining the highest level of safety and operational efficiency is unwavering. We continuously aim to provide convenience to passengers with our services.”
The passenger Terminals managed by DIAL are recognized for their state-of-the-art infrastructure, design and operational efficiency and I am sure Terminal 2 would be no different.
